Our usual newsletter cadence was disrupted last week by the primary election on Tuesday. I spent the day at the polls greeting voters. It felt great to be there - and so many people offered me a thumbs up, a "Good Luck!", or an "I voted for you" on their way out. 

I couldn't sleep the night before -- too anxious! Not because I had a primary challenger - I didn't. I was anxious about amendments 4 and 5 proposed by the GOP-controlled State legislature.

Those amendments were power grabs, plain and simple, and my opponent had endorsed both of them. My volunteers and I urged NO votes on 4 & 5 at every door we knocked.  Statewide opposition formed as Democrats AND Republicans, but also representatives of unions, realtors, teachers, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, religious leaders, and many others all urged voters to reject those harmful amendments. Even with all that activism, despite all the canvassing, awareness-raising, and educating, I still worried. The billionaire-funded "YES" campaign's lies flooded print, broadcast, and social media in the weeks leading up to the election. 

But their plan failed. Missourians in every corner of the State voiced their firm opposition to those awful and ill-conceived amendments. It wasn't even close - those amendments lost in a landslide and turnout for Democrats was strong.

I can't stop thinking about the data. Compared the the two most recent primaries in District 100, an additional 2000 Democratic ballots were requested this year. That's a huge jump, showing perhaps that there's nothing like abuse of power to galvanize opposition - as well it should. The people of District 100 are clearly paying attention.

And while that's good, it isn't enough to secure victory in November. My team and I have knocked on thousands of doors already, but that's not enough either. There are still thousands of people to talk to - and we're doing the work because this is what it takes to win. We must reach more people, raise more money, knock on more doors and convince more voters.
